My Ethos
I am incredibly passionate about inclusivity, removing barriers and making learning accessible, so I take a fully individualised approach with my students, based on their learning history, needs, and preferences.
As a qualified teacher having taught in a variety of settings, I am experienced in working with a range of learning styles, and pride myself on offering great flexibility in how my teaching is delivered. This approach can be especially helpful for those with mental health difficulties such as anxiety & depression, as well as for neurodivergent students (as schools are often not set up to bring out the best in them).
Online one-to-one tuition gives me the freedom to teach in the context of the student's interests. Questions can be modified to relate to a special interest, for example, graphing using Formula 1 speed data. This helps with engagement, enjoyment, and practical application of theory.
The structure of lessons is flexible, which can include breaks, shorter lesson times, or different ways of providing information. Some students with anxiety or a PDA profile can struggle with the pressure of engaging with a tutor, and I have had great success using a shared online whiteboard where they can watch & listen as I show them what to do, with no pressure to respond verbally.
After starting teaching Maths in secondary school, I discovered that I find it much more rewarding to work with the students left behind by mainstream school. Since 2018 I have been focusing on one-to-one tuition, both privately and as part of the home tuition team within an Alternative Provision school.
